Our Story
Founded in 1980
The Teachers Union of Zimbabwe was formed in [Year Founded] to represent educators across all levels of the public and private education sectors. The Union also negotiates salaries and conditions of service for teachers at the relevant National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC).
Locally, the Teachers Union of Zimbabwe is affiliated with the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) and at the regional and global level, it is affiliated to Education International (EI).
After every five years, the Union holds its congress to elect the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and National Executive members who are drawn from provinces where the Union has members.
The elected leadership, i.e., the National Executive Committee, is responsible for running the affairs of the Union between congress periods, guided by the Strategic Plan adopted at the congress.
The Union has an operational secretariat run by full-time staff members. The departments are as follows: 1 – Administration and Finance, 2 – Organising and Labour Relations, 3 – Education, Research, and Advocacy, and 4 – Membership, Welfare, and Gender.
We build our profession by fostering pride, integrity, and excellence in teaching, and by supporting continuous professional development that empowers our members for lifelong impact. We also strive to ensure that teaching in Zimbabwe is a respected, secure, and fulfilling career path that attracts and retains the nation’s brightest minds.
We strengthen public education by advocating for policies and investments that meet the challenges of a dynamic society, and by demonstrating that an empowered, motivated teaching workforce is the most critical investment Zimbabwe can make in its future prosperity and development.
Our mission is to leverage our proud history and experience to build strategic alliances across the education sector and civil society. We use our collective expertise to advocate for better public education policy and to empower our members to negotiate fair and competitive employment contracts
