What We Stand For
Working people deserve good jobs and fair working conditions.
When educators unite, they improve the working and learning environment for everyone. That is why Teachers Union of Zimbabwe was formed—to secure fair remuneration, safe and supportive working environments, and reasonable workloads for all teachers. Thousands of union members across Zimbabwe know that by standing together, they can achieve meaningful progress for themselves and for the entire education sector.
Workplace Health and Safety
Given the nature of the teaching profession, which involves long hours, heavy workloads, large class sizes, and significant emotional and mental demands, Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe places the health, safety, and well-being of its members at the highest priority. The union actively negotiates for policies and statutory protections that safeguard teachers’ physical, mental, and professional health across Zimbabwe’s education sector
Better Pay and Benefits
Teachers in Zimbabwe have the right to refuse unsafe working conditions, the right to be informed of hazards within educational institutions, and the right to participate in health and safety consultations. Employers and responsible authorities are obligated to fulfill their duty to provide safe, secure, and healthy working environments for all teachers.
Gender Equality
The Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe has a responsibility to promote fairness, equality, and freedom from violence for all educators, regardless of age, race, religion, ability, sex, gender identity and expression, or sexual orientation. The union is committed to educating and empowering its members to ensure that all educational institutions are welcoming, safe, and inclusive workplaces.
Social Protection
The Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe leads efforts to strengthen social protection for educators both during their active service and in retirement. The union negotiates comprehensive social protection packages through the relevant negotiating platforms, including non-monetary benefits, and represents the interests of contributors to teachers’ pension and welfare schemes.
Among the social protection initiatives advocated for by the union are housing schemes for low-income teachers, which have already benefited thousands of educators. These programmes, initially implemented in major urban centres, are being expanded to other towns and provinces to ensure nationwide coverage for all members.
The Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe has also negotiated funeral assistance arrangements, ensuring that funeral costs for deceased educators are covered in line with agreed frameworks. In addition, the union undertakes national-level advocacy on social protection through sustained engagement with statutory bodies such as the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) and policymakers, including Members of Parliament, to advance policies that safeguard teachers’ welfare.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
The Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe is committed to trade union education and training, capacity building, and professional development for its members. The union has initiated a wide range of training programmes for educators, including:
Occupational health, safety, and well-being training
Union leadership and organising training
Collective bargaining and labour relations training
Paralegal and labour rights training
Gender equality and inclusion training
Climate change, education, and just transition training
Ideological education and cadre development training
Information and communication skills training
In addition to professional development, the union facilitates skills development opportunities by supporting members’ access to further training, certification, and professional upgrading programmes.
